Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
