Each time a significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
